个人简介
• 2013 to present – I recently developed a new undergraduate major, Global Disease Biology, at UC Davis. The major is a collaboration between the Department of Plant Pathology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Medicine. This educational collaboration at the undergraduate level is unique in the United States. The Global Disease Biology major bridges disciplinary and taxonomic gaps using an integrated approach to advance student understanding of the concept(s) of disease, the societal and personal impacts of past, present and future diseases, and the science behind disease discoveries, causes, evolution, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. Students motivated by interests in health integrate concepts from multiple disciplines to learn how to collectively solve global disease and health problems using innovative approaches. Through a series of core courses, animal, human and plant health problems are introduced to provide students with real scenarios in which they can apply and advance their creative and critical thinking skills.
• 2004 to present – I am currently director of the UC Davis Science and Society undergraduate teaching program. Science and Society (SAS) is an academic program designed to offer students the opportunity to discover the interdisciplinary connections that link the biological, physical and social sciences with societal issues and cultural discourses. Course work examines discovery processes in relation to societal values, public policy, and ethics, including issues associated with cultural diversity. Since taking over the SAS program, I have expanded it to 24 classes that serve over 3000 per year. I have taught courses in this program since 1997. Within the SAS program, I also direct the Career Discovery Group Program (CDG), the Art/Science Fusion program, and the Contemporary Leadership Program. The CDG program introduces first-year students to potential career paths, creates cohorts of students with like interests, and links them with a graduate student mentor. To date, over 1500 students and 70 graduate students have participated in the program; this year over 200 freshmen are registered. As part of the CDG program, I co-teach a mentoring course to the graduate student fellows. I have given a number of invited talks on the CDG program at state and national levels.
• 2000 to present- I serve as the science advisor for the California Oak Mortality Task Force. This collaborative multi-agency group has helped set policy for approaches to research, management and public education on Phytophthora ramorum and sudden oak death. I also advise numerous state, federal (e.g., APHIS), and international agencies (e.g., Canada, UK) on the development of regulations for prevention of spread of P. ramorum. In the context of sudden oak death, I have conducted several hundred media interviews and given over 150 talks as part of an effort to inform the public about this plant disease and what they can do to prevent its spread.
