Bio
My research programme has focussed on the mechanisms of fetal programming. This has involved detailed studies of clinical physiology in human cohorts of men.women and children for whose early growth and development was recorded in detailMany initial observations concerning the relationship between carly growth and programming of metabolism and major hormonal axes resulted from this approach. My current research is directed at elucidating how environmental factors in carly life affect the major systems mediating the stress response.including the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system and the way this is linkedwith adult disease. This research has been supported by grants from the Medical Research Council, the Briti sh Heart Foundationthe Wellcome Trust, the US National Institutes of Health, and Australian NH &MRCI collaborate extensively with research eroups in Europe (notably Finland, the Dutch Hunger Winter investigators in Hollandand the East Flanders.
