Professor David Parker applies molecular and laser physics to fundamental research into molecular photodissociation and collision dynamics. His group invented the velocity map imaging technique which is now applied worldwide in molecular dynamics research. The main research areas are inelastic scattering, VUV photoionization and photodissociation of molecules relevant to astrochemistry. Recently a new research line has started in the department on ice-surface interactions using velocity map imaging detection.
He also carries out applied research into trace gas detection together with Frans Harren. The development of ultra-sensitive detectors is central to both fields.
