David Fortunato studies how policymaking institutions structure decisions made by both governments and voters. One side of this research is focused on understanding how voters make sense of complex political economic processes, like attributing responsibility for policy outcomes across multiple government actors or predicting what may happen after elections. The other side is focused on understanding how governmental actors interact with one another and respond to voters when making various policy choices. This entails studying both voters’ beliefs and choices as well as an array policymaking activities and outcomes including roll call votes and amendments, fiscal policy, sovereign debt and more.
Fortunato’s research has been published in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science and the Journal of Politics, among other outlets, and he is the author of the forthcoming book, “The Cycle of Coalition: How Parties and Voters Interact under Coalition Governance.” A leading expert in European political economy, Fortunato also has an affiliation with the Copenhagen Business School.
