Dr. David Crouse’s experience includes teaching and research, founding and leading industry/university consortia, and technology transfer via startup companies. Dr. Crouse’s teaching and research focuses on advanced metamaterials; photonics and other engineered optical and microwave materials; electromagnetic materials and devices that have practical applications in renewable energy devices, solar cells, sensors, advanced imaging systems; optical coatings; advanced optical materials; and metamaterials for microwave and RADAR systems. Dr. Crouse was the co-founder and first director of the National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Metamaterials (CfM) and was Director of the New York State Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) from 2008-2014. Dr. Crouse served as Chairman of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Clarkson University from 2016-2019. In 2003, Dr. Crouse founded Phoebus Optoelectronics to transition technologies from his CUNY research laboratories to industry—resulting in $20M in funding from over 25 SBIR/STTR, large NASA Advanced Component Technology grant and NASA Instrument Incubation Program grant, and other grants and contracts from many government agencies and industry. His research is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative, with faculty and researchers from numerous fields of engineering and science involved in projects and multi-university research consortia he leads, and with his labs regularly interacting with over 30 large and small companies, 10 government agencies, numerous laboratories at US and foreign universities, and New York City and State organizations. Dr. Crouse’s research laboratories have brought over $20M in research funding since 2002 to academic institutions where he has taught. The CAT and CfM have developed numerous entrepreneurship and technology transfer programs and have assisted professors at Clarkson and CCNY in spinning off 7 companies, helping them take the company through the start-up phase, and in the raising of over $10M in funds for these companies via SBIR/STTR and other programs. Dr. Crouse brings this industry-relevant experience and real-life emphasis of engineering and science to the classroom, by integrating into the curriculum modern engineering techniques and tools, and connecting students up with companies for internships and full-time employment.
