个人简介
My research concerns the spatial pattern and process of biodiversity and ecosystem services, and the potential impacts of global environmental change. Specifically, I aim to better understand the distribution of plants and animals; where, why and how their distribution changes over space and time, assessing the consequences for the composition of ecological communities and ecosystem functioning.
In my research group we employ a mix of approaches to answer my research questions, including:
• predictive spatial modelling and advanced ecological statistics using global biodiversity and environmental datasets;
• a network of permanent experimental/monitoring vegetation plots I established in Snowdonia National Park in 2017, and;
• mechanism focused experiments using controlled environmental growth chambers.
I currently use case studies from a range of taxonomic groups and ecosystems, including:
• dwarf succulent plants of the Succulent Karoo biodiversity hotspot;
• vascular plants and bryophytes of oceanic montane habitats in Ireland/UK;
• global conservation biogeography assessments of plant and animal species with disjunct distributions;
• climate-driven translocation successes and failures focused on terrestrial insects, amphibians & reptiles.
My research has applications in quantifying climate change impacts, evaluating climate change adaptation strategies, and assessing the role of climate in invasion ecology and conservation biogeography. Expanding our understanding of these questions is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies in a time of rapid global environmental change.
I am also interested in understanding the relationships between agriculture and biodiversity. I aim to quantify the role that spatial scale plays in explaining biodiversity patterns and how this affects ecosystem functioning and the delivery of ecosystem services in semi-natural/managed landscapes, in addition to plant-soil-nutrient interactions and the ecological effectiveness of agri-environmental schemes.
