Bio
After graduating cum laude with a BSc (Honours) degree in Entomology in 1982 from the University of Natal, I was awarded an MSc in entomology (taxonomy and systematics of Tachinidae (Diptera)) from the same university in 1984. I then took up a Dean of Biological Sciences scholarship at the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) in 1985, where I studied the taxonomy, phylogeny and biology of the Australian Dexiini (Tachinidae) and graduated with a PhD in 1990. For the period 1990 to 2002, I was the Chief Curator of Arthropoda at the Natal Museum (now the KwaZulu-Natal Museum). In 2002 I left the Natal Museum and have been an independent researcher and academic editor/research facilitator since then. I am also an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Life Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, an Honorary Research Associate at the KwaZulu-Natal Museum, Pietermaritzburg, and an Honorary Research Associate of Iziko Museums of South Africa, Cape Town.
I am a systematist and taxonomist with an interest in the Afrotropical Diptera, particularly the fauna of Southern Africa. However, I have also published on the faunas of Australasia and North America. Early interests were the families Sciomyzidae and Acroceridae, and then the Tachinidae. However, I have published extensively on numerous families of acalyptrate Diptera and described the new African acalyptrate family Natalimyzidae in 2006. My current focus is on the family Nemestrinidae in southern Africa. I have published on 23 different families of Diptera during my research career, and am an internationally regarded expert on more than 10 of these families. I have also co-supervised Honours, Masters and PhD students, some outside of entomology - notably those studying millipedes (Diplopoda).
In addition to my academic/research career, I am a highly experienced academic editor and research facilitator. While at the Natal Museum, I was Associate and then Chief Editor of the Museum's two academic journals for the period 1990-2002. Since 2009, I have been Director of Copy-Writing Specialist Consultants, which offers editing, proofreading, writing and research-facilitation solutions to academia and business. A wide array of disciplines and fields are catered for. A major academic client has been the University of KwaZulu-Natal, to whom editing and research facilitation services have been offered since 2011.
