个人简介
Neurologist, Psychiatrist, and Neuroscientist at Columbia University
Interests: neuropsychiatry, behavioral neurology, lesion-induced psychiatric symptoms, neuropsychiatric complications of dementia, brain network imaging
My career is deeply invested in the bridging of neurology and psychiatry, two distinct but deeply interrelated disciplines. To this end, I completed residency training in psychiatry at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Training Program in 2019, and completed my second residency in neurology at the New York University School of Medicine in 2022. As a fellow in Behavioral Neurology and Late-Life Neuropsychiatric Disorders at Columbia University Medical Center, I am developing special expertise in the assessment and treatment of behavioral disturbances in dementia. With this combined perspective, I have become interested in studying how discrete brain pathology could lead to the emergence of psychiatric symptoms by disrupting networks deputed to human behavior.
My chief clinical interests lie at the interface of neurology and psychiatry – I have deep experience in improving treatment for patients in whom neurological diseases (eg. stroke, epilepsy, neurodegeneration, multiple sclerosis, or traumatic brain injury) contribute to the emergence of psychiatric symptoms, and in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in which comorbid neurologic and psychiatric processes contribute to the clinical presentation.
My leading research interest over the course of my postdoctoral training has been in lesional neuropsychiatry – the study of how focal brain lesions, e.g. stroke, disrupt brain networks critical to supporting normal cognition and behavior, resulting in behavioral, cognitive, or affective syndromes that share features with “primary” or idiopathic psychiatric disorders. My hope is that studying lesional neuropsychiatric syndromes will not only identify brain circuits implicated in secondary psychiatric syndromes, but also help generate testable circuit-level hypotheses relating to the pathophysiology of primary psychiatric disorders.
Through my clinical practice in both neurology and psychiatry, I hope to develop an integrative approach to treating patients with brain/mental disorders, contribute to research in biomarkers and treatment of neuropsychiatric illness, and serve as a translational bridge between two specialties that are often caring for the very same patients.
