Dr. Daniel Pérez López (MSc, PhD), has spent his academic life on the creation, development and commercialization of a disruptive concept, programmable photonics: i.e. giving to large-scale photonic integrated circuits an unprecedented degree of flexibility through run-time software programming. His career started with his PhD and a two-year postdoc research at the Universitat Politècnica de València’s Photonics Research Labs, where he investigated novel photonic integrated circuit (PIC) designs and architectures that can be reconfigured to perform multipurpose functionalities. These works led to a world-record chip performance result (in force from 2017), the award of the prestigious 2017 Graduate Student Fellowship by the IEEE Photonics Society and the 2018 Extraordinary PhD Thesis Award from UPV. His multidisciplinary profile (telecoms, photonic circuit design and development, programming methods and machine learning) led to pioneering concepts, architectures, models and the first dynamic experimental validation of optical Field-Programmable Photonic Gate Arrays, a disruptive concept inspired in multipurpose electrical processors and FPGAs. In 2019-2020, he worked as a researcher/designer at Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc. (Canada) to contribute to the company’s mission to create the world's first practical quantum computer. Next, he received the prestigious Juan de la Cierva Fellowship grant that allowed him to initiate his own research direction, high-dense large-scale programmable photonic integrated circuits, from the creation of innovative photonic hardware to de development of advanced programming methods. In 2019, his research led to the co-foundation of the UPV spin-off iPronics Programmable Photonics (www.ipronics.com), recently awarded by Nature Research as one of the best 2020 high-tech spin-offs to follow.
