- Senior Researcher, Department of Virology, INRB Headquarter, Kinshasa, DRC
- Hospital Practitioner, Lecturer and Researcher, Department of Medical Biology,
Kinshasa Teaching, Kinshasa, DRC
- Member of WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on In vitro Diagnostics (SAGE IVD)
2023-2025/EDL, Geneva, Switzerland
- Domain of interest:
1) Diagnostic tools for emerging pathogens: implementation, management and
performance in the field and laboratory.
2) Implementation and Management of Response to outbreaks and other
emergencies.
- Polyglot (English/French) with technical & scientific skills in Virology, Genomic Sequencing, Molecular Biology, Bacteriology, Immunology, Clinical Biology.
- I have a great field experience on Ebola virus disease (EVD) and other emerging diseases (Monkeypox, Polio, Measles, Plague, Cholera, Bacterial meningitis…) regarding the deployment, management and coordination of field laboratories; laboratory techniques (Molecular Biology, Genomic sequencing, Serology, Bacteriology, Immunology, clinical-biology); and research capabilities (clinical trials, cohort study, surveys, and others). I have a large expertise in the field of infectious diseases (Virus, Bacteria and Mycoses), Immunology and Vaccinology. In the last seven years, I was involved into the last eight EVD outbreaks in my country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
I coordinated the post-EVD8 DRC outbreak response and ecological research in Likati (2017, Bas-Uele, DRC). During EVD9, I was the Head of Itipo field laboratory (2018, Equateur, DRC) and was involved into the ecological research activities.
During the biggest DRC’s EVD outbreak (EVD10, 2018-2020), I was the field coordinator of all 13 INRB field laboratories deployed across three affected provinces of the eastern DRC (North-Kivu, South-Kivu and Ituri). During that outbreak, I was involved into 1) the ecological study searching for the Ebola Virus reservoir in bats, 2) Ebola therapeutics clinical trial, 3) EVD survivors program coordination and laboratory (WHO, INSERM, IRD-Montpellier), 4) evaluation of EVD rapid diagnostic tests.
And I coordinated EVD field laboratories for the five following outbreaks:
EVD11, Equateur (May-September 2020): 5 laboratories deployed; EVD12, Butembo (February-May 2021); EVD13: Beni (October-December 2021); EVD14 (April-July 2022); EVD15 (August 2022 to October 2022).
I am actually the Lab Coordinator of NIH/NIAID studies in the DRC. And I was involved into relevant research activities such as Ebola and Monkeypox therapeutics Randomized Controlled Trial; InVITE study (International study on Covid-19 vaccines).
When the Covid-19 pandemic started in DRC (March 2020), I was appointed as the Coordinator of Covid-19 laboratories in the eastern DRC. Thus, I implemented and still supervise Covid-19 response and research in the provinces of North-Kivu (Goma, Beni, Butembo), South-Kivu (Bukavu), Ituri (Bunia) and Haut-Uele (Isiro and Watsa).
My knowledge of the field (especially in the eastern DRC), my management capacity, my leadership and knowhow helped to be appointed as the Director of the BSL-3/BSL-2 Rodolphe Mérieux INRB-Goma Laboratory. As the Director of the Rodolphe Mérieux INRB-Goma and researcher, I am/was involved into several research activities with international partners such as LSHTM (UK), MSF (France), Epicentre (France), Ridgepack Bio (USA), CDC Atlanta (Gerogia, USA), NIH/NIAID (Baltimore, USA), Mérieux Foundation (Lyon, France), Penn State University (Pennsylvania, USA), FIND (Switzerland), ITM-Antwerp (Belgium), IRD (Montpellier, France), GABRIEL Network, USAID (USA), NIHR/KEMRI-Welcome Trust, John Hopkins University (USA)…
From 2015 to 2017, I was involved into different field studies including serosurveys on
1) the assessment of the immunity against Poliomyelitis and other vaccine preventable diseases in children of 6-59 months in seven health-zones in Haut-Lomami province (DRC).
2) Ebola antibodies detection among healthcare workers in Haut-Lomami and Mongala (DRC).
3) PBMCs isolation among EVD survivors in Bumba (Mongala Province, DRC)
4) Schistosomiasis and Sexual Transmitted Infections (STIs) survey among pregnant women in Kisantu (Kongo Central Province, DRC).
From 2013 to 2015, I worked in the field and laboratory on HIV, Hepatitis viruses and other STIs among Men who have sex with other men (MSM) in Kinshasa. I have focused on the prevalence, sexual practices and behaviors as well as the genetic diversity of those viruses.
Lecturer & Teacher of Virology, Bacteriology, Molecular-Biology, Laboratory deployment and management, Outbreaks response and research management in the laboratory, Clinical-Biology, Laboratory techniques in several universities in Kinshasa and Goma.
