Bio
Since 2015, Dan Horner has worked as a Consultant in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, in the UK. In August 2023 he was appointed to the role of honorary clinical professor within Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre (MAHSC) at the University of Manchester. Dan has been a previous Professor of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine between 2018 and 2022.
Dan chairs the thrombosis committee at Salford and has led the service towards consistently improved outcomes over the last 5 years. These improvements have led to his institution being recognised as a national exemplar centre for thrombosis care and short listed for 3 national awards in 2017/18. Thrombosis care was also highlighted in a previous outstanding practice section of their Care Quality commission report.
In addition, Dan has been a committee member for multiple national thrombosis guidelines. These include the 2015 College of Emergency Medicine guidelines for thrombprophylaxis in lower limb immobilisation, the 2018 British Thoracic Society guidelines for the outpatient management of pulmonary embolism and the 2020 revision of the National Institute for Health and care Excellence (NICE) guidelines on venous thromboembolic diseases. Dan currently acts as a topic expert for multiple other published and developing NICE guidelines, including COVID-19, VITT, Pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Infection.
Dan is regional theme lead for Trauma and Emergency Care within the Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network and clinical lead for the Inflammation and Repair domain at MAHSC. He has an active thrombosis research portfolio. His key research interests are the management of isolated distal deep vein thrombosis, thromboprophylaxis after trauma and risk assessment methods to determine the need for thromboprophylaxis in patients requiring hospitalisation.
