Career Trajectory
Bio
Currently, Daniel Cantabella is a postdoctoral researcher in the Environmental Technologies and Circular Bioeconomy at BETA Technological Center (UVic-UCC). in this center, his main role is the implementation of technologies destined to valorise agro-food industry wastes to obtain high-value added products, including biofertilisers, biostimulants and biogas. These technologies include the Anaerobic Digestion and the Solid State Fermentation (SSF).
Also, he holds a PhD in AgroFood Science and Technology obtained in the University of Lleida. During his period as a PhD student, his efforts were put into the elucidation of the plant growth-promoting effect of three rhizosphere microorganisms on in vitro deciduous fruit tree plants. Also, he studied the mechanisms underlying these plant growth-promoting effect, as well as the use of agro-food industry by-products to massively produce these microorganisms.
Besides, he also has proven experience on the biochemical responses of plants to abiotic and biotic stresses. During his undergraduate period, he performed his final degree project in the Fruit tree Biotechnology group of CEBAS-CSIC (Murcia) to study the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of salt-tolerance response in Stevia rebaudiana plants, observing that these plants implemented a series of adaptations at the physiological level and at the biochemical level to cope with salt stress without affecting the production of steviosides. Those findings make saline waters and salt-affected soils suitable for the growth of this plant species.
After finishing his master studies, he continued collaborating with the Fruit Tree Biotechnology group within the national project AGL2014-52563-R, whose main objective was to study a new salicylic acid (SA) biosynthetic pathway in Prunus spp. In this research, it was described for the first time a third pathway for SA biosynthesis in peach plants involving cyanogenic glycosides, with mandelonitrile controlling their turnover. In addition, this biosynthetic pathway was somewhat involved in the response of peach plants to biotic and abiotic stresses as well as in the salt stress response of a transgenic plum line.
