Specifically, his research focuses on the following areas: (1) climate change effects on carbon, nitrogen, and water cycling in terrestrial ecosystems such as grasslands, forests, and croplands, (2) the effects of agricultural practices on crop productivity and greenhouse gases (such as CO2 and N2O) emissions, (3) simulation of ecosystem carbon, nitrogen, and water cycling using ecological models, and (4) data syntheses on ecosystem productivity, biomass partition, litter decomposition, P cycling, and stoichiometry of C, N and P in terrestrial ecosystems.
Dr. Hui has published one book, several book chapters and more than 100 papers in scientific journals such as Nature, PNAS, Global Change Biology, Ecology, New Phytologist, Soil Biology and Biochemistry, Plant and Soil, PLoSOne, and Tree Physiology. He has served as associate/academic editor for PLoSOne, The Crop Journal, and Plant Ecology, and on editorial boards of several journals such as Global Change Biology and Scientific Reports. He also reviewed many manuscripts for more than 40 journals. Dr. Hui has reviewed proposals for several funding agencies such as NSF, DOE, Romanian National Research Council, Austria Research Council, NSF of China, and Hong Kong Research Grants Council. He also served on proposal review panels for the NSF and NSF of China. Hui's research has been sponsored by the US Department of Energy, USDA, and the NSF.
