Bio
Daniel Hörcher is postdoctoral research associate of the Transport Strategy Centre (TSC) within the Centre for Transport Studies (CTS) at Imperial College. His research interests are centred around the following themes.
1. The economics of public transport supply: microeconomic models of tariff structures and capacity provision (frequency, vehicle size, timetabling), and their optimisation with respect to social welfare oriented objectives with financial, equity-related, and political constraints;
2. Crowding discomfort experience and its implications for pricing and capacity optimisation: understanding and quantifying the external social cost of public transport use in crowding, and managing it with efficient pricing policies;
3. Wider urban economic effects of transport provision: understanding and quantifying the external social benefits of travelling that are not captured in traditional measures of consumer and producer surplus. The role of agglomeration economies in transport pricing and investment appraisal;
4. Statistical analysis of large-scale automated transport data. Revealed preference discrete choice models for measuring user preferences. Causal inference methods for ex-post evaluation of interventions in the public transport system.
Daniel serves on a regular basis as reviewer for scientific journals including Transportation Research Part A, Part B and Part C, Transportation Science, Economics of Transportation, Journal of Transport Economics and Policy, Transportation (Springer), IEEE Transactions on ITS, Transportmetrica A, and the Journal of Transport Geography.
He gives lectures and tutorial sessions in the undergraduate civil engineering course Transport Demand and Economics (CIVE97017), and is assistant supervisor of PhD candidates Anupriya, Praj Xuto, Nan Zhang, Tobie Cusson, Yanzi Su, as well as undergraduate and MSc students.
