Fitzgerald has published over 400 papers in cardiovascular research and in inflammation.[34] His research is, as of 2020, in the area of the biology, genomics and proteomics of atherothrombosis. He has established several companies, including SurGen,[35] which developed pharmacogenetics in support of clinical trials, and Java Clinical Research Ltd., a company established to develop technologies for the clinical investigation of drugs.
