Bio
Scientific interests:
Design, optimization, monitoring, control and modeling of biological processes. In particular, seeking the intensification of biological processes for wastewater and waste gases treatment. Sulfur and nitrogen cycles are of primary interest.
Brief history:
I conducted my PhD thesis in the field of monitoring and control of urban wastewater treatment plants using deterministic models. Between April 2001 and September 2002, I was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Riverside, under the supervision of Professor Marc A. Deshusses in studying the feasibility of retroffiting industrialchemical scrubbers to biotrickling filters for the treatment of odorous waste gases at WWTPs.
After September 2002, I launched a new research line at UAB focused on the design, characterization, monitoring and control of bioreactors for the treatment of volatile organic compounds, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide.
In January 2005 I was promoted to associate professor in the area of Chemical Engineering at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. In July 2019 I joined the Department of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering at UAB as full-professor.
Research work:
Principal investigator and collaborator in several Spanish and European projects within the fields of biotechnology and environmental engineering as well as researcher in several research projects with companies and public institutions. I am member of GENOCOV, recognized as Research Group of the Government of Catalonia. I have published over 90 publications in international indexed journals in the field of biological removal of pollutants from wastewater and waste gases.
