My prime interest is in the use of magnetic resonance techniques for furthering cognitive neuroscience. The techniques that are of interest are: functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), perfusion-, blood volume-, and diffusion- weighted imaging. Proton spectroscopy is also used, in particular to measure GABA: the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. Much work is devoted to the improvement and extension of these techniques, for example by increasing accuracy, spatial and temporal resolution, sometimes in combination with other methods such as TMS and EEG. These applications are always driven by a goal in medical cognitive or medical neuroimaging, for example high spatial resolution fMRI is used to probe activity in the different layers of the cortex, thus giving insight into the direction of information flow within the brain; diffusion-weighted and resting state fMRI probe the connectivity between brain regions, which may be affected by learning, ageing or indeed disease.
