Bio
Her current research interests reside on neurodevelopmental alterations and age-related neurodegenerative disorders, namely Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), with a main focus on neuroinflammatory signaling pathways and dysregulated neuronal-glia cross-talk, including the shedding, microRNA content and distribution of extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes. In terms of scientific contributions, she helped to define some of the pathways and mechanisms participating in astrocyte aberrancies, in EVs/secretome-mediated microglia activation and in aging-associated alterations in ALS and AD. She recently identified a set of inflammatory-associated miRNAs as determining glia polarization and neurodegeneration. In recent work, the lab has been using astrocytes directly converted or reprogrammed from patient fibroblasts as disease models to explore the role of these cells in neuroinflammation and their regional pathological diversity. Final goal is to identify targets, early disease biomarkers and develop driven medicines. Dora Brites was awarded with the Santa Casa prize in 2015 for developing an autologous exosome-based therapy to deliver neuroprotective cargoes in ALS, and is part of the European Joint Programme for Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND) for developing improved models for studying AD. Dora Brites has authored more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals ans was recently awarded with the Santa Casa prize in ALS. Dora Brites was/is principal investigator of 18 funded projects. She has successfully supervised 10 Post-Doctoral researchers, 16 PhD students and 33 master thesis. Dora Brites is Head of Neuron Glia Biology in Health and Disease at Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa), Professor of Histology and Embriology and of Physiopathology of Neuroinflammation, Institutional Coordinator of Ciência Viva no Laboratório, Secretary of the Assembly Table of the Portuguese Biohemical Societry, Member of the Coordinator/Executive Committee of Portuguese Glial Network, Member of the Coordinator Council and Executive Director of Mind-Brain College and Vice-President of the Scientific Council.
