Bio
Dr. Davide Barreca is an associate professor of biochemistry of the University of Messina. He earned his degree thesis in the laboratory of the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry, University of Messina, Italy. He graduated on 24/07/03 with laude, arguing a thesis on heat stabilization of Ornithine carbamoyltransferase by some additives. He received his doctoral training at the University of Messina, from 2003/04 to 2005/2006 academic years, with a doctoral thesis topic on the antioxidant and pro-oxidant activity of some poliphenols of natural source on cells culture. During academic years 2005/2006 and 2006/2007, Dr. Barreca has been tutor of Biological Chemistry, Applied Biochemistry and Biochemistry Methodology at the University of Messina, for Degree Course in Biological Science. Since 06/06/2008 he attends his post-doctoral training in “Scienze e Tecniche Molecolari e Cellulari” at the University of Messina.
In April 2011, he won a competition for a position of University Researcher in the field BIO/10 (Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry), at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Messina.
Starting from June 2019 he becames associate professor in the field BIO/10 (Biochemistry and Clinical Biochemistry) at the University of Messina.
Dr. Barreca is official teacher of the following courses:
- Biochemistry and applied biochemistry for the degree course in Pharmacy
- Biochemistry and applied biochemistry for the degree course in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology
- Biochemistry with elements of clinical biochemistry for the degree course in Pharmaceutical Science applied to Health Products (SFA-PS)
Dr. Barreca research activity has been carried out on diversified topics on:
- biomolecules stabilization processes by sugar, salts, ions and biopolimers through chromatographic, spectroscopic and electrophoresis techniques, analyzing chemical-physic variations of solvent and macromolecular solutions
─ purification and characterization of protein in particular on ornithine carbamoyltransferase, isolated from different organisms and folding/unfolding studies of the same enzyme
─ biochemistry and physiology adaptation of arginine pathway in marine organism (with particular regard to elasmobranches)
─ heavy metal pollution analyzing biochemistry and physiology modifications due to growh in their presence
─ valuation of main pathway involved in subject working in environment with high biological and chemical hazard by enzyme isomorphism profile (lactic and malic dehydrogenase, seperoxide dismutase, caspase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase) membrane properties and functions, primary and secondary metabolites
─ isolation and identification of some poliphenols of natural source and antioxidant and pro-oxidant activity determination by cell culture (HEP, HEP G2, VERO, erythrocytes and lymphocytes) assay
─ studies on erythrocyte membrane, hemolysis assay, lipid peroxidation and membrane fluidity
─ dynamic and structural correlations between proteins and solvent, in the absence or in the presence of kosmotropes and chaotropes, following folding or unfolding, dehydration and preservation, with the purpose to clarify the relationship functionality/structure
─ protein’s thermodynamic and kinematic parameters (enthalpy, entropy, DG of folding/unfolding, Wyman equation) determination in absence or presence of physical or chemical stresses
The research activity has been performed using several enzymatic, chromatographic, electrophoresis and spectroscopic techniques, such as HPLC, Circular Dichroism, UGGE (Urea Gradient Gel Electrophoresis), Fluorescence, IR and UV-Visible spectroscopy, Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), HPLC-DAD-MS-MS.
He is:
- a member Italian Society of Neuton Scattering,American Chemical Society (Division of Biological Chemistry e Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry)
- in the Advisory Board of International Natural Product Sciences Taskforce (INPST, https://inpst.net/)
-member of the Editorial Board of Eastern-European Journal of Enterprise Technologies, Current Enzyme Inhibition, Phytomedicine, Plants, Current Molecular Pharmacology, Current Cancer Drug Targets
- Editor in chief of Mini-Reviews In Medicinal Chemistry
-Editor of Clinical Trials and Case Studies
- Academic editor of the Journal of Chemistry
- Guest editor of the journal Current Medicinal Chemistry and Plants.
- peer reviewer for many international journals.
The research activity is attested by publications on international journals and participation to national and international conferences.
