Career Trajectory
Bio
My thesis was funded by a Wellcome Trust fellowship and explored the influence of genetic polymorphisms of the lipid pathway on the natural history of Hepatitis C Virus infection, I describe the influence of APOE polymorphisms on chronic HCV infection.
Currently my major research interests are in the area of long-term complications of anti-retroviral therapy for HIV infection in people who live with HIV, in vitro diagnostics particularly point of care tests and COVID vaccination studies.
I have led research within infectious diseases and have developed a robust portfolio of studies with the research team and this helped in the response to COVID-19 research as below.
I work extensively with the NIHR Newcastle Diagnostic Cooperative (Newcastle MIC), reviewing clinical utility of products and conducting clinical trials to show cost effectiveness and utility of diagnostic products. I have a formal role in the Newcastle MIC as Infection lead, I am involved in reviewing new diagnostics with in-vitro diagnostic companies, assessing care pathways as well as running studies in this field. I advise the Newcastle MIC regarding clinical study set up and clinical protocols.
I have been PI in a large number of studies in HIV therapeutics, antibiotics and observational studies in HIV and Influenza. I have ben PI for a clostridium difficile vaccine study and a number of diagnostic studies. I have also been Chief Investigator in an investigator led CTIMP study and a diagnostic test study.
Pandemic- during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic I led the COVID-19 research team within the hospital trust, the team were very successful and led to the delivery of over 60 clinical studies in the trust. I have been local PI for treatment studies ACTT-1 (first UK patient recruited), ACTT-2 (only UK site to recruit); demographic and blood collection studies ISARIC, ICOS, MERMAID and also in-vitro diagnostic studies FALCON. I am PI in the Janssen vaccine study- ENSEMBLE-2 and Valneva vaccine study- COV-COMPARE. I am Sub-I in a further 6 COVID vaccine studies.
I have been Sub-I for all the other studies recruiting patients into the therapeutic studies e.g. RECOVERY, Re-MAPCAP and ACCORD.
I was Sub-I in the Oxford vaccine study with delegated PI responsibilities and was integral to the setup of this study. My main roles were ensuring symptomatic pathways were established and robust, helping to set up the CRF/trust for large vaccine studies liaising with IPC, trial co-ordinators, IT, staff, pharmacy to run the studies.
With the NIHR Newcastle IVD co-operative I have progressed clinical trials nationally. I am part of a national collaborative CONDOR looking to validate and provide in-context evidence for in-vitro diagnostics and particularly point-of-care tests for SARS-CoV-2. I have been co-lead in the analytic part of this group which has led on validation exercises for LAMP devices and other tests for SARS-CoV-2. I helped develop the protocol and set up of FALCON (one of the studies within CONDOR) in the trust and also in the local screening centre run by Deloitte.
As the NE and North Cumbria NIHR COVID-19 vaccine research lead I set up a process for reviewing vaccine studies to be delivered in the region. I chaired a regular meeting to progress this and this led to the successful introduction of all the major COVID-19 vaccine studies in the UK into the North East of England. With 3 main sites and over 2000 participants recruited regionally.
