My research focuses on elucidating processes and organism interactions at the microscopic scale. Biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and carbon are the fundamental processes underlying the functioning of all ecosystems. Driven by microorganisms from all branches of the tree of life, these processes take place at the microscopic scale controlled by physical limitations to solute transport at the molecular level as well as environmental pressures on cellular metabolism. Measuring chemical gradients at the sub-millimetre scale allows for the assessment of not only the rate of given processes, but also its spatial distribution and how it interacts with other processes in the vicinity. This in turn provides the means to tease apart the processes that underpin a net ecosystem level outcome and how the ecosystem may respond to environmental change.
