个人简介
Cristóbal Verdugo-Escamilla started his undergraduate Chemistry studies at the University of Córdoba (Spain) where he received an internship from the Department of Organic Chemistry to work in the synthesis of biofuel by using aluminophosphates as support for organic-enzymatic hybrid materials. He continued there to specialize in Fine Chemistry where he got a Master’s Degree in Advanced Fine Chemistry (2008).
From 2008 to 2011 he carried out his PhD Thesis at the Organic Chemistry Department of the same university, a period in which he spent four months in a doctoral stay at the University of Cardiff (Wales, UK) developing synthesis of inorganic layered double hydroxides (LDH) materials to be used as catalysts in biodiesel production. During this stay, he faced crystallographic problems and intensively worked with X-Ray diffraction techniques to characterise the catalysts.
In 2010 he joined the Laboratorio de Estudios Cristalográficos (LEC) CSIC-UGR, to work at X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) facility. During these two years, he acquired hands-on experience in crystallography and crystallization while keeping his external collaboration with the University of Córdoba developing methodologies for the enzymatic production of biofuels using hybrid catalysts.
In 2012 he was contracted as a postdoctoral researcher at Laboratorio de Estudios Cristalográficos (CSIC-UGR) and became involved in the research lines: biomineralization and biomorphs, from the point of view of the hybrid materials, and cocrystallization, with an essential focus on structural characterization by X-ray diffraction methods, FTIR and Raman microscopies.
In 2013, Dr. Verdugo joined an international Master’s degree in Crystallization and Crystallography completing his background in this area.
Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at LEC with an extensive experience in X-Ray characterization of inorganic and organic compounds and specialized in XRPD analysis and structural characterization from XRPD data and raising interest in biomineralization, biomimetic and hybrid materials and their applications.
During his career, Dr. Verdugo has published more than 45 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, 6 book chapters and more than 70 conference communications.
He is also actively involved in several science dissemination activities, being a member, from 2014, of the Organizing Committee of the International Schools of Crystallization (ISC & ISBC) organized at LEC, of the Science Dissemination Service at Instituto Andaluz de Ciencias de la Tierra and primary instructor and organizer of the CSIC Posgrade School specialization course "Basis and Applications of Powder Diffraction: Quantitative and Microstructural Analysis and Rietveld Method".
He was also a member of the Scientific Advisory team of the international exhibition CRISTALES: A World to Discover, intended to show the global public the importance of Crystallography in daily life.
Moreover, he has participated in several international stays at different universities and research centres. Also, he has experience as a scientific co-advisor during experiments using Synchrotron Radiation at ESRF (France), ALBA (Spain) and Diamond Lightsource (UK) facilities.
Dr. Verdugo has taken part in several national and European research projects, highlighting the projects EU-FP7 ERC Advanced Grant (PROMETHEUS), Proof of Concept LACRYS, ERA-NET BlueBio CASEAWA and two European cooperation networks (Action COST UBIOCHEM and CRYSTALLIZE).
