Career Trajectory
Bio
I completed a B.Sc in Health Sciences majoring in Human Movement Science and Nutrition in 2005 and an honours degree in Nutrition in 2006 at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. Thereafter I enrolled for a masters degree in Nutrition in 2006 at the North-West University (NWU). My MSc built upon the haemostasis research of my honours project. After receiving my degree, I continued with a PhD. I investigated the cardiovascular disease risk factor homocysteine’s dietary and genetic determinants as well as gene-diet interactions influencing this protein. I received the Unilever Nutrition Award, which is presented to a junior scientist for the best oral presentation on Nutrition Research at the South African Nutrition Congress in 2010, when I presented the nutrigenetic findings regarding alcohol in relation to homocysteine. After completion of my PhD, I partook in a staff exchange programme of the European South African Partnership for Nutrition Research. I investigated vitamin D status in the elderly at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Here, I also had the opportunity to attend a nutrigenetics/genomics course and have thereafter attended several other bioinformatics and personalised medicine workshops. Upon my return to South Africa until now, I resumed research on the interplay between socio-cultural, demographic, environmental and lifestyle factors including diet and/or genetics on cardiovascular disease risk factors (haemostatic variables including fibrin clot structure and function, homocysteine, lipids and C-reactive protein).
I was employed as a permanent lecturer in the School of Physiology, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences’ Nutrition department at the NWU in 2010. I have been promoted to senior lecturer in 2012 and to associate professor in 2018. Since my appointment, I have been involved in 16 contact modules within Nutrition and Dietetics degrees and have been the module owner of 8 with class sizes ranging from 1 (for a post-graduate module) to 324 (for an undergraduate module). In terms of teaching learning activities, I have received 2 institutional excellence awards (2013 and 2019), partook in the online teaching learning award programme (2021) and have been awarded a NWU Open Education Resource fellowship for 2021-2022. I have co-authored one book chapter entitled: "Open educational resources’ likely contributions to education and implications for self-directed learning". I have been the co-supervisor of 3 MSc students (passing cum laude), supervisor of 2 MSc students (1 passing cum laude), assistant/co-promotor of 4 PhD students and promotor of 2 PhD candidate(s) (1 graduated; 1 submitted on 29 November 2022). Currently I am guiding one masters and 1 doctoral students (main promotor of 1) that will be delivered in the future. I have acted as internal and external examiner for 10 candidates and an arbitrator for 1 MSc.
I have 27 publications in reputed journals (23 international and 1 national original research papers as well as 1 international and 2 national reviews) (view publications list at https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&authuser=1&user=EMoJta8AAAAJ) with 1 under review. My work has been cited 390 times. I have an h-index of 11 and an i10-index of 11 on Google Scholar, Scopus 10 and Web of Science 10. I have 3 national and 4 international first authored as well as 5 national and 8 international co-authored conference presentations. One of my presentations (as mentioned before) and that of a post-graduate student were awarded prizes for the best research addresses.
I hold a National Research Foundation rating (Y2 from 2016 and C2 from 2022). I was part of the organising committee of the XXVI International Fibrinogen Workshop 2016 that was held in South Africa and served as an abstract reviewer. I have been treasurer and vice-chair of the Northern Branch Council of the Nutrition Society of South Africa. I was part of the organising committee of the Nutrition Congress 2018 (the 27th Congress of the Nutrition Society of South Africa and the 15th Congress of the Association for Dietetics in South Africa). I acted as a reviewer for International Congress of Dietetics (ICD2020/21) and the Nutrition Congress 2023. I am also an active member of the African Society of Human Genetics and the International Society of Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics. I am regularly asked to act as an ad-hoc reviewer for both national and international scientific journals and have 40 peer review records of 38 manuscripts and 31 verified reviews (view peer review list at https://publons.com/researcher/3119924/cornelie-nienaber-rousseau). I have been invited to be a review editor for Thrombosis Journal an international Springer publication and act as a topic editor for a special issue of Thrombosis section of Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine i.e. Rising Stars in Thrombosis 2022. Currently I am also Guest Editor for Applied Sciences.
