Bio
Graduated in Biology (University Complutense of Madrid) I got my Ph.D, with International Mention and Cum Laude distinction, at the IREC, financed by an European contract (Zoetis) on the identification of protective antigens through the integration of "omics" techniques for the development of new generation tick vaccines. In that period, I stayed for 3 months at the Institute of Veterinary Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (Freie Universität Berlin) where I published a study of tick protective antigens.
In my postdoctoral stage, I participated in mycobacteriosis control studies in zebrafish model and I stayed at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (Lisbon), learning tick-pathogen interaction proteomics. I stayed in NARO (Uganda) for the development of an international project and I worked in Prof. Cerón's group (University of Murcia) for 2 years, funded by a Juan de la Cierva de Formación fellowship, relating oxidative stress with immune response in vaccinated animals and studied immune system markers against infectious agents for diagnostic applications. I also contributed to vaccine development publications in other ectoparasites (red mite, flea, sea lice and mosquito).
Nowadays, I am the Biotechnology Lab head in SaBio group, and my research is focused on the application of new platforms for vaccine development by the identification of protective epitopes allowing the design of new chimeric antigens. I am also applying epitope mapping for diagnosis of tick-borne pathogens (TBP) in a new collaboration with the research University of Gdańsk, Poland working in the diagnosis and control of Borrelia burgdorferi. I am recently inventor of a patent for a protective chimeric antigen of Anaplasma phagocytophilum designed using this approach.
Relevant achievements
• Publication of 66 peer-review articles most are international collaborations with Mexico , South Africa, Norway, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Uganda, Nepal, Germany, Thailand, France, United States, Poland and Portugal. According to Scopus, my h-index is 19.
• Participation as investigator in 2 projects funded by the EU, 5 Nacional projects, 3 contracts with international veterinary companies, one to transfer recombinant protein expression system technology. In other 2 contracts I am inventor of 2 patents for the development of vaccines to control sea lice in salmon (Zoetis) and ticks in pets (Beaphar).
• Awarded with a Juan de la Cierva Incorporation 2020, I am Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) in 2 projects and 2 contracts: an international project funded by Uganda Government in the development of vaccines against ticks in cattle where I was co-director of a doctoral thesis; in an Intramural Innovative Project for Young Researchers, studying the relation of vaccinomics to Systems Biology and in two contracts with private companies to develop a probiotic and an oral tick vaccine. I am also co-directing a thesis in collaboration with the University of Córdoba about diagnosis of TBP in Iberian lynx applying detection of immune system markers learned with Prof. Cerón.
• Publication of scientific dissemination articles (Trofeo), a TV report (CMMEDIA) about SaBio Group, research is the future. To commemorate the Day of Women and Girls in Science I participated in several dissemination activities in schools and UCLM and in an interview in La Tribuna of Ciudad Real. Informative presentations about IREC at FERCATUR, organization of an experiment workshop in the IREC in the Science Week organized by CSIC.
• Guest Editor in 2 Special Issues in Vaccines journal. Reviewer in Frontiers (Review Editor), Ticks and tick-borne diseases, Scientific reports, European Journal of Wildlife research and Experimental Parasitology. Member of thesis defense tribunal: Tuberculosis in wildlife: new diagnostic tests and host response to vaccination in red deer.
• 200h taught at UCLM in: Basic and Applied Research in Hunting Resources and Agronomic Engineering Master’s degrees and in Agricultural Engineering, Biotechnology and Pharmacy degrees.
• Participation in SARS-CoV-2 studies.
Actual scientific objectives
Development of new approaches to identify new antigens of ticks and TBP useful for diagnosis and immunoprotection and to combine these techniques with the study of molecular markers of the immune system to have a more multidisciplinary approach and maintain the national and international collaborations.
