Bio
I am Doctor in Physics and Full Professor at the Department of Microbiology of the University of Granada (UGR). I started my scientific career with a FPI grant to do my Ph.D., which I defended in 1999. Then, I worked at the University of Georgia (USA) for more than two years, first as a Posdoctoral Researcher and then as a Fulbright Scholar. Finally, I returned back to UGR hired as “Contratado Ramon and Cajal” and later, with a tenure-track position, then Associated Professor and Full Professor. I have my Bachelor, Master and PhD Degree in Physics, and I also have a Master Degree in Microbiology.
Since 2004 I have initiated and direct a new research line at the Department of Microbiology. This line is now consolidated thanks to projects of the National Plan of I+D+I of the Spanish Government, three from the regional goverments and three for technology transfer that I have been granted as PI (Principal investigator), most of them had also associated a PhD grant for a student (FPI). I have two patents. I have very active international collaborations with different USA universities and other universities in Israel and Europe. I have directed 6 Doctoral Theses. I am also the Chair of the Degree in Biochemistry and the Chair of the Master in Biotechnology.
My research line is highly multidisciplinary and it is focused on bacterial biomineralization, meaning mineral formation by bacteria. We study the formation of magnetic nanoparticles mediated by magnetosome proteins from magnetotactic bacteria, expressed as recombinant proteins. In our laboratory we express those proteins, purify them and, finally, we use them to produce magnetic nanoparticles with specific properties. We characterize the nanoparticles and funcionalize them with different molecules with the goal of using them as smart nanotransporters for a targeted chemotherapy, immunotherapy and gene therapy as well for hyperthermia treatments. Other applications for our patented nanoparticles are not only related to clinics, but also environmental.
