个人简介
I am a Professor of Cognitive Neurosciences and Director of the the Swinburne Centre for Psychopharmacology and Professor of Psychology at Swinburne University. The Centre for Psychopharmacology has 20 full time research staff and 20 research students and is a leading research and teaching institute in cognitive neuroscience. I have an extensive track record in research and consulting and has published more than 200 peer reviewed international expert papers in the area of psychological assessment, biological psychology and psychopharmacology. I have also attracted more than 20 million dollars in research grants over the last 10 years from National and International government and Industry sources. I have been on the advisory panel for the International Society for Intelligence Research and I am currently on the editorial board for the journal Intelligence and 5 other journals and was an invited member of the Neuroscience Panel of the World Economic Forum over the last 2 years. I have also been asked to review scientific papers for more than 50 different scientific journals. I am a meber of several scientific bodies including the Society for Neurosciences, the Advancement for Psychological Sciences and I am a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. I am currently coordinatingone of the most comprehensive clinical interventions to improve cognitive function in the elderly using nutritional supplementation called the Australian Research Council Longevity Intervention funded by the Australian government together with several international companies.
I am regarded as a leading researcher in the area of natural drugs, cognition, mood and the brain. The focus of his research has been to study the efficacy of cognitive enhancing natural substances, nutritional and nutraceutical supplements. I have key publications and grants with several natural substances such as Ginkgo Biloba, Bacopa Monniera, DHA and fish oils, St John’s Wort, Pycnogenol, multi vitamins, rye grass, pine needle extract and patented combinations of smart drugs amongst many others. More recent work has been in large pharmacological trials for the prevention of cognitive and brain aging and supplementary treatments for abnormal aging such as Alzheimer’s Dementia. In the nutrition and natural medicines area he has held grants with Nestle, GSK UK and India, Blackmores, Flordis Australia, Horphag Switzerland, and more than 20 other international companies. I have also also held several key government grants which involve the administration of nutritional supplements to large elderly cohorts in order to ameliorate cognitive decline. Much of my work on natural medicines and nutrients on cognition has been with the Co-Director of the CHP, Prof Andrew Scholey.
I have also published key articles in the area of bacopa and cognition and a range of herbals and nutrients (e.g., Kava)in different clinical disorders including depression and clinical anxiety with Dr Jerome Sarris. These studies have been funded by the National health and Medical Research Council.
Over the last decade I have also been involved in developing and measuring emotional intelligence/competencies in school children. This work has led to strong relationships with several key Australian schools, the most notable has been a long term relationship with the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane in which several emotional intelligence programs have been developed. This work is ongoing with plans for new programs at year 8 and Year 1 over the next year. Research on a wide range of scholastic variables such as scholastic performance, bullying, resilience, coping etc and emotional intelligence are ongoing. Much of the work I have been publishing in this area has been coordinated by Dr Karen Hansen and more recently by Justine Lomas.
The last area of research focus has been in the area of illicit drugs and driving. I have collaborated with Vicpolice and Vicroads in Australia to undertake a range of studies in which we have evaluated the effects of various drugs such as amphetamine, MDMA and cannabis (amongst others) on driving behaviours, standard field sobriety tests and cognitive performance. This work is ongoing with a recent NHMRC grant exploring the role of various drugs on serious car accidents in Victoria, Australia. I am currently contributing to a government committee on the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. Much of my recent work on illict substances and driving has been with Dr Luke Downey.
