Bio
He obtained his Master's degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Padua in 1987, became a lecturer at the same university in 1990, and has been working as an associate professor in Petrology and Petrography since December 2002. Currently, his teaching activities include courses in “Geomaterials: Use, Vulnerability, and Sustainability”, “Material Properties, Use, and Conservation: Natural Stone Materials and Tools”, and “Field Geology” for Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Earth Sciences and Archaeological Sciences. Since 2016, he has been teaching the course in “Geology, Seismology, and Geochemistry” at the École Nationale Supérieure des Travaux Publics (ENSTP) in Yaoundé, Cameroon, as part of the internationalization activities of the University of Padova.
He is interested in the research field of applied petrography, focusing on the following topics: analysing stone deterioration and the relationship between stone recession and environmental parameters to refine predictive dose-response functions; characterizing pottery, mortar, plaster, and stone materials from different sites in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tunisia, Spain, Italy, for archaeometric studies related to provenance and productive technology assessment; designing new building materials using waste products from industrial activities in the concept of a circular economy; analysing petrography and geochemistry of carbonates for paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental purposes (proxies based on calcifying organisms) from various geographic areas (Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic and Southern Oceans, WS Australia, Antarctica); applying microprobe methods based on proton beams to the geosciences (e.g., for geochemical dating of monazite); studying the metamorphic petrology of crystalline basements. He has been or is involved in the following EU-funded projects: HYPERION (GA 821054): a project aiming to deliver an integrated resilience assessment platform for historic areas; THETIDA (GA 101095253): a project addressing safeguarding Europe's cultural heritage from climate change and natural hazards; WATERISKULT (GA 101022386): a project providing a quantitative assessment of climate change risk to underwater cultural heritage; M3DEA (GA 101108204): a project developing a Diagnostic Imaging Model (DIM) for stone recession rate assessment.
He is also involved in the following PNRA (Antarctic Research National Program) Projects: Geochemical signals in Antarctic Biogenic Carbonates for Paleoceanographic Reconstructions (GRACEFUL); Source and impact of greenhouse gases in Antarctica (SENECA); Bioconstructional organisms from the Ross Sea under Climate Change: ecosystems and biodiversity “oasis” to monitor and protect (BIOROSS).
He is the author/co-author of 154 peer-reviewed articles in international journals and books, 104 of which are in ISI journals, with 2136 citations and an h-index of 26 (source: Scopus, August 24, 2023 - https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=6603796076 ).
