Bio
(1992-95) Degree in Natural Sciences at Univ. of Naples Federico II.
(1995-99) Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology at Univ. of Naples Federico II.
(2000) Qualification as expert in Zoology at Second University of Naples.
(2000-01) Post-doctoral Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the Dept. of Neuroanatomy, George-August Univ., Goettingen, Germany.
(2001-15) Research Associate at Dept. of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies, Second Univ. of Naples.
My interests span a wide range of topics in neuroscience, i.e. neurobiology, neuroanatomy, neuroendocrinology. I have worked mainly on fish, amphibians, and reptiles with experimental research conducted in the laboratory. Recently the attention has shifted towards the study of brain plasticity following the alteration of different types of sensory experiences with a multidisciplinary approach (morpho-functional and evolutionary of neuronal systems, as well as behavioral), and towards canine ethology, to study behavior and cognition in domestic species and the evolutionary changes related to the domestication process.
My scientific activity can be summarized in the following research lines: (i) Neuroanatomical organization, ontogeny, evolution, and function of some neuropeptides in the CNS of lower vertebrates, with particular reference to reproductive and evolutionary aspects. (ii) Morphogenesis and development of anterior cranial nerves (olfactory, vomeronasal and terminal nerves) in non-mammalian vertebrates by using different immunohistochemical markers and neuroanatomical tracers. (iii) Environmental regulation of reproductive endocrinology of amphibians. (iv) Anatomical and functional interactions between mast cells and the nervous system of vertebrates: characterization, migration, and distribution with histochemical, and immunohistochemical methods. (v) Phenotypic, neurochemical and behavioral plasticity in non-mammalian vertebrates. (vi) Behavior and cognition in domestic species and evolutionary changes related to the domestication process.
Research impact is documented by many publications (in extenso / book chapters) on internationally renowned journals and numerous contributions or presentations at National and International Conferences.
