Bio
Clara Alves-Pereira completed her major in Biochemistry at the University of Porto in 2001. She started her career as research assistant studying the genetic component of autoimmune disorders in the laboratory of Berta Martins (ICBAS, Porto University). In 2007 she joined the Gulbenkian Doctoral Programme (PGD) and started her Ph.D. at the laboratory of Vasco Barreto at the Gulbenkian Science Institute (IGC, Oeiras, Portugal) the following year. Her Ph.D. work solved a question that had been lingering in immunologists minds for over 40 years: the problem of the initiation of monoallelic recruitment of the immunoglobulin genes in B cell lineages. In 2014 Clara decided to embrace a completely new research tool set, bioinformatics, and started her postdoctoral training at the laboratory of Aoife McLysaght in Trinity College Dublin (Ireland). In 2017 Clara earned a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie global fellowship to pursue her studies on mono allelic expression at the Laboratory of Alexander Gimelbrand at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Boston, US). During 2020/21 she interrupted her fellowship to join the laboratory of Dalila Pinto at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (NY, US) and contribute to the bioinformatic annotation of a new Human brain coding and non-coding expressed genetic map with long-read sequencing data, and the analysis of brain splicingQTLs. In 2022 she returned to Dublin to finish her work on monoallelic expression. Clara is interested in the phenotypic effects of subtle gene and allelic expression variation at the clonal level and its effect in health and diesease. She envisions applying the experience she accumulated over the years to the study of the clonal dynamics and therapeutic interactions in cancer and other disorders.
