Bio
I am currently a staff researcher at the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) in Palermo, IASF department. Previously I was a Research Fellow for the European Space Agency at ESTEC, the European Space and Technology Centre in the Netherlands, and a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Astronomy of the University of Cambridge in the UK. My research focuses on accretion physics and feedback phenomena. I am interested in the interaction between AGN jets and the gas in clusters of galaxies and how the jets heat the gas preventing the cooling catastrophe. More recently, I have been working on the coupling between accretion of matter onto black holes and the launching of powerful winds, particularly at high accretion rates. This is another important ingredient of feedback of active galactic nuclei, where strong winds launched by the accretion disks around supermassive black holes impact the galactic gas, expelling it and quenching star formation. My powerful research tools include high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. This technique allows me to study the hot gas in different astrophysical environments such as clusters of galaxies, active galactic nuclei, and accreting binaries in great detail. A significant fraction of this research was pursued at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge in the X-ray group of Andy Fabian. I obtained my Ph.D. at Radboud University Nijmegen in collaboration with SRON, the Netherlands Institute for Space Research, under the supervision of Frank Verbunt, Jelle Kaastra, and Elisa Costantini. The topic of my thesis was the composition of the interstellar medium in the Galaxy as seen through its absorption lines imprinted in the X-ray spectra of accreting binaries. My master thesis with Maurizio Paolillo and Giuseppe Longo at Naples University, in Italy, focused on the properties of the X-ray time variability in active galactic nuclei and the development of a model to retrieve accretion rate and black hole mass from the variability properties.
