Jonathan D. Romney received a B.S. degree in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology, an M.S. in astronomy from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in radio astronomy from the California Institute of Technology in 1978. He came to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in 1983 to work on defining the Very Long Baseline Array project, and led the team that designed and built the VLBA's original hardware-based correlator, the first large-scale implementation of the FX correlation concept. Subsequently, he led NRAO's participation in the Japanese VSOP Space-VLBI mission, and the VLBA Spacecraft Navigation Pilot Project that demonstrated the VLBA's capability for high-precision angular position measurements of interplanetary spacecraft. Both of the latter projects involved close collaboration with personel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and led eventually to the scientific studies presented in this paper. His scientific interests center on VLBI studies of active galactic nuclei.
