Bio
I am Chris Jacobs and I’m a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena. I work at the Department of Entomology under the supervision of Dr. Heiko Vogel.
I obtained my Bachelor degree in Biology at Leiden University in 2009. My thesis was about personality related playback response in the Great Tit (Parus major). I performed this research under supervision of Dr. Hans Slabbekoorn in collaboration with the Evolutionary Ecology group at Antwerp University, where I did the fieldwork for this study.
After my Bachelor degree I continued at Leiden University with the master track Evolutionary and Ecological Sciences. During this master I travelled to Vancouver, Canada to do an internship at the University of British Colombia in the Irwin Lab, with Darren Irwin and Julie Lee-Yaw. I looked at fitness effects in a hybrid zone of two subspecies of the long-toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum).
A second internship during this master was at Leiden University on the extraembryonic development in the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum). This internship was under supervision of Maurijn van der Zee and led to a PhD position after I obtained my masters degree in 2010.
Since 2010 I have worked as a PhD student in the model system Tribolium castaneum (the red flour beetle). The powerful genetic tools available for this model system provide me with the opportunity to study the function of an extraembryonic membrane, the serosa. While this membrane does not contribute to the development of the embryo it has received little attention in research. But our data showed that this extraembryonic membrane does have significant value for survival of the embryo. I succesfully defended my PhD thesis on the 4th of December 2014.
After my PhD I continued working at Leiden University as a Postdoctoral Research Associate for another 6 months and as guest employee for another 3 months.
My research area is mostly evolution and development (evo-devo) but also looks at the ecological significance (eco-evo-devo).
