个人简介
I have been involved in cell therapy research since 2004 when I undertook a fellowship in Japan at a leading corneal stem cell therapy group. From then I have maintained an interest in how the external environment can control and direct cell behaviour, often by fist appreciating how this occurs in nature and then looking to replicate in vitro. This approach has led to the Tissue Engineering lab that I now run and a significant improvement in our fundamental understanding of what maintains stem cells in an undifferentiated state inside the body and what physical and biochemical cues are needed to affect this outside the body i.e. for tissue engineering purposes. Along this journey I have made several notable discoveries and filed 6 patents. These have also led to the spinning out of 3 distinct bio-tech companies (Atelerix, 3D Bio-Tissues and Cellularevolution) co-founded by postdocs in my lab. In total these companies have raised over £3 million in investment and currently employ over 20 people. My demonstrable interest in entrepreneurial/academic activities has recently led me to take up the role as Director of Business Development for the Faculty of Medical Science at Newcastle University. As part of this role I am actively seeking and strengthening pathways for younger scientists to engage with industry.
Ongoing scientific projects include improving serum free culture for lab grown meat, creating structured tissues for clinical (ophthalmic) and industrial (lab grown meat) applications. I am also collaborating on an active clinical trial to investigate biomechanical modulation therapy. This new approach hinges upon our recent discoveries in stem cell niche biology and looks to to take a druggable approach to endogenous stem cell therapy for corneal wounds.
