I am a community ecologist and population geneticist with a particular interest in understanding patterns of diversity composition and distribution and underlying evolutionary processes that drive these patterns. My research focuses mainly in freshwater ecosystems and examines macroecological patterns of diversity. Given the complexity of factors affecting biodiversity, I have performed inter-disciplinary research assessing patterns of diversity at different hierarchical levels. Therefore, combining population genetics, phylogenetic and functional ecology perspectives on macroecology, I have been working on how biogeography, ecological conditions and biological traits have influenced diversity patterns from intraspecific genetic differentiation, through species diversification to community assembly processes. My main contribution has been to highlight the importance of using multi spatial and temporal scale approaches together in biogeographical and evolutionary ecological studies for recognizing the evolution-ecology continuum. This perspective provides a wider view of the importance of the historical and contemporary factors determining current patterns of diversity
