Professor Celia Dana Claire Christie

Celia D.C. Christie-Samuels, MBBS, DM Peds, MPH, FAAP, FIDSA, FRCP (Edin) is Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology and Public Health) at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, Jamaica, since 1999 and in 2023 she became “Professor Emerita”. She is also a Consultant Pediatrician at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) and has headed UWI’s Vaccines Infectious Diseases Centre (VIDC) and Jamaica’s Perinatal, Paediatric and Adolescent HIV/AIDS/Infectious Diseases Program (JaPPAAIDS). She participated in several international clinical trials, including one that led to approval of a pentavalent rotavirus vaccine for infant gastroenteritis [New England Journal of Medicine, 2006]. This manuscript received the “Lancet’s Paper of the Year Award”, for the best publication in the International Medical Literature in 2006. She also described epidemic pertussis (whooping cough) in a highly immunized population of children in Greater Cincinnati, Ohio, USA [New England Journal of Medicine, 1994]. She completed her undergraduate training in Medicine and Surgery [1979] and postgraduate training in Pediatrics [1984] at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona. She also completed two Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Pediatric Infectious Diseases [1987] and in Hospital and Molecular Epidemiology [1992] both at the Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital, Connecticut, USA and obtained her MPH degree [1999] from Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, USA. She was Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases at the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Research Foundation, Ohio, where she was also Infection Control Officer/Hospital Epidemiologist and an Attending Pediatrician and Infectious Diseases Specialist for nine years. She has served on the USA’s Food and Drug’s Administration’s - Anti-infective Drugs Advisory Committee of their Center For Drug Evaluation and Research, protecting the rights of pregnant women and children for 4 years. Her works have focused on: HIV/AIDS in women, children and adolescents; implementation of clinical trials of vaccine preventable diseases (pertussis and rotavirus); emerging infectious diseases, including pertussis, drug-resistant pneumococcus, tuberculosis, zika, dengue, chikungunya and SARS-CoV-2/ COVID-19 and also molecular epidemiology. She has garnered over $3.6 Million USD’s in funds to the UWI to support her research projects (viz: Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation; Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention - USA; National Institutes of Health – USA; Merck and Co. USA; Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria; European Commission etc). She has mentored numerous graduate students. In addition to research, she participates in teaching, clinical care, administration and outreach. She has been recognized with honors and awards, including The International Leadership Award from the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation [2002], Excellence in Science Stephen Preblud Award from the USA’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [2002] for her work on the Cincinnati Pertussis Epidemic [Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2001], Service Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America as Chair of their Committee on Professional Development and Equity [2002], The UWI’s Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence [2008], Caribbean Public Health Association Award for Research Excellence [2013], UWI’s Principal’s Research Awards nine times for research excellence, Gold Medal for Eminence in Science from the Institute of Jamaica [2014], the Jamaican National Honor of “Order of Distinction, Commander Class” (CD) [2018]; awards from the Pediatric Association of Jamaica, US Embassy of Jamaica, Jamaican Gleaner for her Education, Leadership, Advocacy and Research during the COVID-19 pandemic [2021, 2022], amongst many other honors. Her motto is to “live life to the fullest, while serving others”.
