Bio
I am a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) by training. I completed my undergraduate studies at Karolinska Institutet, in Stockholm 1991 and wrote my Master thesis in 2005 investigating spelling abilities in children with speech sound disorder. I completed my PhD-studies at HEAD (HEaring And Deafness) graduate school in Linköping 2014 where I examined phonological processing skills and reading in children with cochlear implants and hearing aids.
During 2016 to 2019 I did my postdoc at the Communication Sciences Research Center at Cincinnati Children's Medical hospital, USA. Here I was part of a research lab that examined listening difficulties in children using MRI, EEG, audiological and behavioural tests. I have focused on children with developmental phonological disorders, and sensitive measures of hearing and phonemic discrimination and reproduction. We have refined a speech perception test for children from 4 years of age where we have used homogenised word stimuli.
The Swedish part of my postdoc comprises a medical record study and a questionnaire-based study where the goal is to learn more about how SLPs and parents understand and perceive listening difficulties in children with developmental phonological disorders. One Master Thesis in Speech Language Pathology has been finalised in 2018; Ellika Forsberg and Lotta Ohtamaa at Uppsala University, Thesis title: Listening difficulties in children with developmental phonological disorders: A survey of parents' perceptions of their children's listening difficulties. And one is ongoing: Tyra Blomqvist and Matilda Brunk: Listening difficulties in children with developmental phonological disorder. A retrospective medical study,
During 2015-2017 I was in charge of a study where we investigated how children with Down syndrome would benefit from computerised phonics training. This was accomplished in collaboration with Nelli Kalnak (Lund University) and Margareta Jennische (Uppsala University). This study is currently under revision.
Together with Maria Levlin (Umeå University) I am evaluating the effects of phonics training on reading proficiency in Swedish second grade poor readers.
During 2019/2020 we will launch a qualitative study investigating communicative activity and participation in children with developmental phonological disorders using the framework of ICF-CY (International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health: Children and Youth version) in collaboration with Carla Wikse-Barrow, Phd Candidate at Stockholm University and Thomas Strandberg, assoc. prof. in social sciences, Örebro University.
