个人简介
Prof. Cecilia Moraa Onyango is an Associate professor of Horticulture with over 18 years experience in training, research and community outreach in the areas of crop production systems, postharvest handling of produce, standards and food safety. The main focus of her research work has been on African traditional crops’ production physiology, conservation and use; stress physiology and temperature-based modulation of growth and development in crops. She also has a wide experience in participatory farmer and end-user technology evaluation, selection and adoption in addition to systems intensification and market-led development. She has over 30 publications in various refereed journals and has supervised and mentored over 20 graduate students including Ph.Ds. She has been with the University of Nairobi for over 18 years as an academic member of staff in the Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection.
Cecilia received her PhD. in Horticulture from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Her research interest was to develop sustainable production systems for African traditional vegetables to maintain their quality and improve yields to provide healthy diets and income to rural communities especially those of women in Kenya without compromising the environment.
Cecilia has wide expertise in Partnership Building and Resource Mobilization. She has participated in implementing research grants as either a principal investigator (PI) or a Co-PI in several grants and the most recent ones include; Food safety in produce from informal settlements in Kenya supported by the United States Aid for International Development (2020- 2022); Earth observation and environmental sensing for climate-smart sustainable agro-pastoral ecosystem transformation in East Africa (ESSA) supported by the European Union (2020-2024) and Capacity development for conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources for agricultural productivity, resilience and sustainable livelihoods in East and Central Africa supported by the World Bank/SIDA (2014/2018); Developing a secure food system based on well-adapted pearl millet genotypes in appropriate crop mixtures in Kenya supported by Kenya government through the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation ( 2013-2015) among other.
Cecilia distinguishes herself as a scholar who embraces a systems thinking approach to create sustainable food systems as a means of achieving food security and nutrition through the application of a multifaceted and a multi-sector effort to achieve the highest quality of life for all leaving no one behind. She is a Co-chair of the Phytosanitary Standards, Food Safety and Consumption sub-Committee of the Horticulture Technical Working Group; a member of the Multi-Agency Food Safety Technical Working Group of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries and A board member of Organic Consumers Alliance.
