Professor Catherine M. Kelly, MB, BCh, BAO, FRCPI, MD, MSc (Clin. Epi) is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at the Mater Private Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.
Prior to 2022 she was the Medical Director of the Mater Hospital Clinical Trials Research Unit. Prof. Kelly is passionate about increasing clinical trial options for individuals with cancer. She was recently awarded the HRB Cancer Trials in Ireland research award to build trial infrastructure in Ireland East Hospital Group. She also led the largest Irish patient study;' Understanding and Attitudes toward Cancer Clinical Trials among Patients with a Cancer Diagnosis' which enrolled over 1000 patients with cancer across Ireland.
Prof. Kelly was awarded through a competitive peer reviewed process the Irish Cancer Society Clinician Research Leadership Award which provides protected time for increased research involvement at the clinical-laboratory interface and allows her to promote all types of cancer research in Ireland. She was also awarded the Thomas and Edna Naylor Award by the Institute of Health, Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto for her research in breast cancer drug interactions.
Prof. Kelly was Chair of the Breast Cancer Group of Cancer Trials Ireland from 2015-2020. She is a scientific advisor for Oncomark an Irish diagnostics company that is focused on the development of novel panels of cancer biomarkers and she prepared the first evidence based report supporting the reimbursement of the breast cancer genomic test Oncotype DX on behalf of the Irish Society of Medical Oncology. She served two terms as a board member of the National Cancer Registry of Ireland.
Prof. Kelly received her Medical Degree from the Royal College of Surgeons In Ireland. She has a First-Class Honours Science Degree from University College Dublin and a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Toronto. She completed Medical Oncology Specialist training in Ireland and in the UK (St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Royal Marsden) and she competed internationally for fellowships in Toronto and MD Anderson Cancer Centre, Houston, Texas, USA (ranked number 1 for cancer care in US) where she was awarded the Susan G. Komen Interdisciplinary Breast Cancer Fellowship.
