个人简介
The primary mission of my work is to prevent child physical abuse (CPA) via studying and changing social norms relevant to the physical punishment of children. As a community health scientist and prevention interventionist, social epidemiologist, and licensed certified social worker who has been working in the field of violence prevention for over two decades, I am keenly aware of the multi-layered, interdisciplinary team approach that will be required to effectively prevent CPA, reduce childhood trauma, and promote positive parenting on a population level. My research activities, particularly from the past decade, have been focused on understanding how best to reduce population rates of CPA. My scholarship is designed to be translated and applied to stop the intergenerational cycle of violence, reduce childhood exposure to trauma, maximize children’s health, and reduce health disparities. Toward this end, I have used a range of research methodologies including randomized controlled trials (RCT), quasi-experimental designs, large population-based epidemiologic studies, community-based surveys, and focus groups. Between my post-doctoral training and work at Columbia University with Dr. Neil Guterman and my training as an NIH Fellow in the “Design and Conduct of RCTs Involving Behavioral Interventions” in 2007, I have been well trained in the design and implementation of rigorous evaluation and study designs.
Currently, I am the PI of a highly relevant NIH/NICHD-funded study (R01 HD093665; Taylor & Fleckman (Multi-PI)): “Longitudinal follow-up of brief parenting interventions to reduce risk of child physical maltreatment in a selected population.” In this study, we are conducting a long-term follow-up for an RCT designed to test the efficacy of two brief parenting interventions on parent and child outcomes relevant to changing norms regarding physical punishment and reducing population rates of CPA. I am also a Co-I on (R01 HD095609; Theall/Branas (Co-PIs)) “Place matters - Adaptable Solutions to Violence at the Community Level.” The goal of this study is to assess the impact of place-based interventions (i.e., greening and blight remediation) on youth and adult violence. My role is to consider the specific impact on child abuse and intimate partner violence.
The body of this research has contributed to understanding the complex etiology and prevention of CPA, with a particular focus on the impact of social norms. I have presented at national and international conferences about the prevention of CPA and changing norms regarding physical punishment. I have mentored and advised more than 80 masters students, more than half a dozen doctoral students, and junior faculty. I was the Founding Director of the Violence Prevention Institute at Tulane University and I continue to actively collaborate with that team in developing a novel academic-community engaged training program. In summary, I have both the expertise and strong motivation to carry out my role in this proposed study.
