Bio
Catarina has a degree in Biochemistry by the Faculty of Sciences in Porto University, Portugal, and performed her training period at the University of Szeged in Hungary on the transcriptional regulation of the sMMO operon in Methylococcus capsulatus in 2003.
Between November 2003 and February 2006, she was hired as Research Assistant by the Institute of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Medicine of Porto, Portugal, where she worked on the role of GABA metabotropic receptors in the thalamic processing of chronic pain.
Between 2006 and 2010 she developed her PhD studies on the control of food intake by pancreatic hormones and characterized the neuronal signaling pathways involved in the anorectic effect of amylin. The studies were performed at the Institute of Veterinary Physiology, University of Zurich, Switzerland, and the title of Dr. sc. nat. (PhD) by the Faculty of Sciences UZH was achieved in October 2010.
Since August 2011 she has been working as a Researcher Assistant - Post Doc at IBMC / i3S in Porto, Portugal, with the support of an intra-european Marie Curie fellowship, which was followed by a FCT-BPD, and her studies focus on the role of amylin, a peptide expressed by the pancreas but also by sensory neurons of the dorsal root ganglia, in nociception. Particularly, the identification of amylin effects in different pain modalities, the effect of amylin lack during development in pain processing, and the role of amylin receptors in the central nervous system. Amylin is a novel sensory neuropeptide candidate which seems to be able to modulate the nociceptive system subjected to sustained and chronic pain. Amylin may become a therapeutic tool and might be recognized as a new pain modulator released by primary afferents.
