个人简介
Dr. Carter Hunt is an environmental anthropologist and associate professor at Penn State University where his research and teaching focus broadly on the social science of environmental conservation, especially the relationship between efforts to conserve biodiversity, the forms of tourism this attracts, and the social, cultural, and environmental wellbeing of surrounding regions. His research is based on over 70 months of fieldwork since 2003, during which time he has addressed the ways that biodiversity conservation, social capital, sustainable development, cultural justice, political empowerment, community institutions, livelihood sovereignty, and environmental ethics are variously influenced by tourism.
His recent ethnographic work in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, is funded by the NSF Cultural Anthropology program (2020-present), and he was previously hosted there by the Charles Darwin Foundation as a Fulbright Scholar program (2019-2021). He was the co-leader of the Penn State Parks and People Tanzania Program between 2016-2020, a set of field courses designed to provide students with the opportunity to engage in applied research to address conservation and development challenges around Udzugnwa Mountains National Park. He has published dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters drawing upon this work and additional field research in Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Peru.
At Penn State, he holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management, and a courtesy appointment in the Department of Anthropology. He is the co-chair of the dual-title graduate degree program in Transdisciplinary Research on Environment and Society (TREES), and a former co-chair of the Latin American Studies Program. He is an affiliate faculty of the Institutes for Energy and Environment, the Sustainability Institute, and the NSF Research Traineeship in Regenerative Landscape Science (Landscape U). Prior to joining Penn State, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Anthropology and the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University.
