Career Trajectory
Bio
Carlos São-José is Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacy, Pharmacology and Technologies in Health (DFFTS ) of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (Portugal), where he teaches different subjects in the areas of infectious diseases and molecular microbiology. CSJ is alumnus of FCUL-Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (Portugal), and of CNRS-National Center for Scientific Research (France), where he conducted his doctoral and post-doctoral studies on phage molecular biology (1998-2008). During 2008-2010, CSJ held a position of Principal Investigator in the field of molecular microbiology at IMM-Institute of Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon (Portugal). Currently, CSJ leads the PhaBRIC lab at iMed (https://imed.ulisboa.pt/labs/phage-biology-research-and-infection-control/), which studies virus/bacterial cell interactions, both with fundamental and applied purposes. One of CSJ’s research interests is to understand the mode of action and regulation of the lytic proteins that phages employ to compromise the bacterial cell envelope. This knowledge has been explored to devise bacteriophage-derived products to fight pathogenic bacteria, particularly those exhibiting resistance to conventional antibiotics. Part of this research has been developed in collaboration with the biotech company TechnoPhage, SA (http://www.technophage.pt/). CSJ was scientific manager of the Bacteriophage business unit of TechnoPhage during 2008-2010.
