Career Trajectory
Bio
Carlos Avendaño graduated in Medicine (M.D.) and received the Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in neuroscience from the Autonoma University of Madrid (UAM), in 1974 and 1977.
In 1978, he moved to the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO, for a postdoctoral stay with the late Prof. M. Cowan. Further research stays were in the Salk Institute, San Diego, CA (1983), and as visiting professor in the Department of Physiology of the University of Montreal, Canada (1991–1992). He is at present Full Professor of Human Anatomy and Neuroscience at the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Neuroscience of the UAM. His work has dealt mainly with the anatomy of neural connections of somatosensory, motor and association areas of the cerebral cortex, as well as with different aspects of brain plasticity in adult mammals. His most recent research lines focus specifically on adult plasticity of the rodent trigeminal system, and neural bases of neuropathic pain.
Prof. Avendaño is a member of the major international Societies of Neuroscience (SfN, FENS, IBRO), and of the Spain's societies of Neuroscience (SENC-President 1999–2001) and Anatomy (SAE).
