个人简介
Carlos J. P. Monteiro was born in 1978, in Coimbra (Portugal). He concluded his Licenciature degree in Industrial Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC) in 2003. Then he moved to industry where he worked over two years as Production Technician and Laboratory Technician at MAHLE-Engine Components. By the end of 2005, he was invited to participate as Research Fellow on the project “Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in Cancer Treatment" sponsored by the University of Coimbra, Bluepharma, Coimbra Municipality and CCRDC. In 2007 he obtained an MSc degree in Chemistry- Chemical Processes from the University of Coimbra.
In 2007 he was funded with an individual Ph.D. fellowship (SFRH/BD/37652/2007) by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). By April 2012, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Macromolecular Chemistry. Along with the Ph.D. (supervisors: Prof. Mariette Pereira and Luís Arnaut), his research was focused on Organic Synthesis, Photochemistry, and Material Chemistry, namely in the synthesis and characterization of new Tetrapyrroles for cancer PDT and solar cells applications. During the development of his Ph.D. project, he had the opportunity to work as a Visiting Research Student at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, UAB (Barcelona, Spain) carrying out electrochemical studies of Porphyrins for DSSC, under the guidance of Prof. Iluminada Gallardo (2009). In 2011, he moved to Louisiana State University, LSU (Baton Rouge, USA), to functionalize porphyrins by Suzuki coupling reaction, under the supervision of Prof. Graça Vicente and Prof. Kevin Smith.
From 2012 to 2014 he developed research in the U. of Porto (FEUP) and U. of Coimbra (FCTUC) as a Post-Doc Research Fellow on the field of Hybrid Materials for Catalysis, by immobilizing homogenous organic ligands into inorganic supports (Silica and Carbon Nanotubes). He was invited as Auxiliary Professor at the University of Coimbra (2014), to teach Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis, and supervises final-year projects on Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry undergraduates. He was a co-founder of LUZITIN (https://www.luzitin.pt) (2010) where he was the Quality Assurance Manager (2011-2014) and the Head of the Chemistry Research Laboratory (2014-2017).
Carlos Monteiro participated in the medicinal chemistry discovery phase, and drug substance manufacturing process development program, of the first Portuguese oncological drug candidate, Redaporfin in clinical trials. He was also the accountable Synthetic Chemist in the LUZACNE project developing low molecular weight porphyrin, chlorin and bacteriochlorins as a PDT option for acne treatment. Project No. 30218 was partially funded by QREN.
Then he joined the LAQV-Requimte, Dep. of Chemistry, Univ. of Aveiro, Portugal, to develop research in the PREVINE project (PTDC/ASP-PES/29576/2017), funded by FCT. He is also a teacher assistant at Organic Chemistry Lab. and supervisor of undergrad final year project students and MSc students in the frame of the ERASMUS+ program.
Since April 2022, CM started working as a freelance chemist providing industrial advice and grant proposal writing services as an external consultant for SPARTAX Chemicals, a contract development and manufacturing organization company owned by Nuno Maulide and João Seixas.
CM published so far 28 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (h-index=14), 2 book chapters, 1 editorial, inventor of 3 patents, presented 41 poster communications and 19 oral communications at scientific meetings or seminars (10 as speaker and 9 as co-Author). The peer-review papers accounted for 804 citations, without self-citations (average citations of 32.23). CM reviewed articles for 14 different journals and acted as Guest Editor of 5 Special issues (4 in Molecules-MDPI 2020-2023, and 1 special Issue in Frontiers in Chemistry, 2022).
He was awarded, as co-inventor, the INVENTA Prize (2011) for the best Portuguese patent in health registered between 2001 and 2010, and INVENTA Grand Prize for the best patent in all categories. He also received IUPAC Young Chemist Award at the 42nd IUPAC World Chemistry Congress, Glasgow, the UK in 2009, as well as other travel grants to support his participation in international conferences.
