He held Visiting Professor positions at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh-EE.UU. (2004), Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon-Portugal (2005, 2010-2011), DECRC-ABB Corporate Research Center, Ladenburg-Germany (2005), Universidad de Valladolid, Valladolid-Spain (2006–2011), Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia (2006), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona-Spain (2005, 2006, 2008–2012), Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona-Spain (2009) and Universidad de Cantabria, Santander-Spain (2009), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Madrid-Spain (2011–2012).
After getting his Ph.D from UNL in 2002, he became a Postdoctoral fellow at the Chemical Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh-EE.UU. (2002–2005) and, subsequently, a Marie Curie Fellow at the Chemical Engineering Department at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona-Spain (2005–2006). After concluding his Posdoctoral activities, he returned to UNL to teach Modeling, Simulation and Optimization graduate and undergraduate courses at the School of Chemical and Industrial Engineering as well as to supervise Ph.D research projects and students at INTEC. Prof. Méndez joined Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL) in 2006 working as Titular Professor and Associate Research in the Institute of Technological Development for the Chemical Industry (INTEC).
His research contributions have been in the areas of planning and scheduling of batch and continuous processes, optimal process synthesis, design and operation, supply chain operational management, hydrogen network operation, oil pipeline planning and scheduling, dynamic vehicle routing and pickup & delivery problems. His teaching interests include courses on Modeling, Simulation and Optimization in Process Systems Engineering.
