Bio
I have a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Masters of Science (1st class Hons) in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Sydney (2003). Since then I have worked in the discipline of transcriptomics in ageing, obesity and cardiovascular diseases based at the Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics, University of NSW; and in the discipline of cancer biology at the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute. I also worked in the industry as a senior consultant in the healthcare sector, specialising in medical writing. I worked as a scientific lead and project manager for an Investigator-led clinical trial using bacteriophage therapy to treat patients with severe Staphylococcal infections. Currently I am the business development lead and co-Deputy Director of Phage Australia.
I have been awarded an NHMRC Peter Doherty fellowship (2005-8) and a competitive and prestigious University of NSW Vice-Chancellor Research Fellowship (2009-2014) to continue my research in functional genomics. I was award a conjoint Associate Professor (University of NSW) in January 2016 in recognition of my long-standing and significant contributions to research, teaching, mentoring and administrative management. In 2015 Oct, I won a scholarship to study a course of Women In Leadership through Global Leadership Initiative (completed in 2016 Sept).
I was a Chief Investigator in securing 3 NHMRC project grants since 2003 in the discipline of transcriptomics and cardiovascular disease i.e., identifying biomarkers in atrial fibrillation (Woodcock, Lin et al, 2004-7), myocardial infarction (McMullen & Lin, 2010-2) and using microRNA therapeutics to restore cardiac function (McMullen & Lin, 2013-5). Over the course of my career, I have acquired over AUD$6.4 million in external and internal competitive research and equipment funding (Category 1) including an ARC LIEF in 2006 (LE0668440) and 4 Cancer Institute NSW Research Infrastructure Grants (one in 2005, 2 in 2015, 1 in 2016) and other grants from Dust Disease Authority NSW (2015) and Slater and Gordon Research Fund (2015). I am managing Phage Australia (Medical Research Future Fund from Australian Federal Government) along with Prof Jon Iredell and Dr Ameneh Khatami that encompass national and international networks in biobanking, diagnostics, therapeutics and genomics to deal with antimicrobial resistance.
I was the president of the Australasian Genomic Technologies Association, a premier genomic association in Australia and New Zealand, www.agtagenomics.org.au from 2013-2015, VP (2019-2023) and currently I remain a managing exec member of AGTA.
I am the Genomic Chair for Scientific Advisory Committee at Westmead Research Precinct (3 medical research institutes and 2 teaching hospitals) and a GEDI (Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) committee member at AAMRI - Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes.
I am the Deputy Director of Phage Australia - a consortium of clinicians and researchers with an interest in utilising phage therapy to combat AMR.
