Bio
Charles W. Magee received the B.S. degree in chemistry and the Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, in 1969 and 1973, respectively. He was first introduced to secondary ion-mass spectrometry (SIMS) during his graduate work.
From 1973 to 1987, he was a Member of the Technical Staff in the Materials Characterization Research Group of RCA Laboratories, Princeton, NJ, where his work mainly dealt with the trace elemental analysis of thin solid films by means of SIMS and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. In 1987, he left RCA to cofound Evans East, a commercial materials analysis laboratory specializing in surface, thin-film, and trace elemental analysis, where he had the position of Director of Analytical Services. In September of 2005, Evans East was purchased by the Evans Analytical Group, LLC, East Windsor, NJ. The Evans Analytical Group has six surface and thin-film analysis laboratories, worldwide, with a staff of 116 people. He is a founding stockholder in the company and currently serves as a Chief Scientist. He has authored over 150 publications and presented over 100 invited lectures, both in the U.S. and abroad, in fields of materials characterization. He is also the coauthor of the book Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry: A Practical Handbook for Depth Profiling and Bulk Impurity Analysis.
Dr. Magee was the recipient of the RCA Laboratories Outstanding Achievement Award for his work in SIMS in 1976 and 1982. He was the recipient of the “Young Author Award” from the Solid State Science and Technology Division of the Electrochemical Society in 1979. In 1982, he was the third recipient of the “Peter Mark Memorial Award” from the American Vacuum Society, where he was elected a Scientific Fellow in 1994. In addition to his membership in the American Vacuum Society, he served for many years on the steering committee of the Greater New York Chapter, having been its Chairman in 1980 and again in 1994. In 1982, he was elected a scientific member of the Bohmische Physical Society. In 1983, he was appointed as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology B. In addition to his being a Fellow of the American Vacuum Society, he is a member of the Materials Research Society and Sigma Xi.
