Bio
My laboratory investigates how the immune system responds against infection with highly pathogenic human viruses such as those that cause hemorrhagic fever. Our strategy is to develop immunocompetent mouse models that allow mimicking of host immunity to these viruses at their natural portals of entry, for example, the skin and the respiratory tract. We focus our research on understanding how the interactions between viruses and dendritic cells influence disease outcome and immunological memory. To validate our laboratory work, we also perform field research on hemorrhagic fevers. Specifically, we have developed flow cytometry capacity to evaluate patient immune responses against Lassa fever in Nigeria and against Ebola virus disease in Guinea and Liberia. The lessons learnt from these basic studies are used to develop new vaccines and immunotherapy.
