Bio
Cristina Brice Pita is currently a Researcher at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), University of Aveiro, Portugal, where she is responsible for the Coastal and Ocean Planning and Governance (COPING) group. She is also a Principal Researcher at International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), U.K., where she leads the Inclusive Blue Economy team. She is an expert in socioeconomic aspects of fisheries for the United Nations World Ocean Assessment (UN-WOAII and WOAIII). She takes part on several committees at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) (WGSOCIAL, WGRMES, WGCEPH, SIHD). She is also part of several international networks (TBTI international network, SSFhub, ECOMAR-CYTED Ibero-American network). She has been a member the Management Committee of two COST actions (OCEANGOV and MARCONS).
Her research has been related to fisheries and coastal areas, focusing aquatic food systems, fisheries governance and markets, Marine Protected Areas. She has been involved in 30 project/contract/tenders and been the PI of 8 projects (4 EU-financing, 4 national financing) focused on these topics.
She co-edited 1 book and 1 Special Issue on Small-Scale Fisheries, has contributed to >55 ISI-indexed publications, 9 book chapters and 2 Technical Reports for the European Parliament. She has been invited as a main speaker to 9 conferences, organised conference and workshops, chaired panel sessions in 14 conferences, has been part of the scientific committee of 3 international conferences, and had presented/been involved in 26 presentations at international conferences and symposia over the past 5-years alone.
She has been involved in the supervision of 7 Postdoctoral fellows, 6 PhD and 8 MSc students, 2 graduate ERASMUS exchange students, and was the main advisor to an international visiting PhD student. She is currently responsible for the MSc course "socioeconomic dimension of fisheries" on the International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea) (University of the Algarve, Portugal; 2019-2020), has been lecturing in the Joint European Master in Environmental Studies – Cities & Sustainability” (JEMES CiSu) (UA) and 2 other MSc courses in UA, and was an invited lecturer in a further 9 MSc courses in Portugal, Spain and USA. She has also been part of 4 thesis committees.
