个人简介
C. Nunes concluded her PhD in Biochemistry in 2008 at University of Aveiro (UA). During PhD, she was a visiting researcher at Leuven Univ. (Marie Curie grant) and INRA Rennes (funded by FCT program). Motivated by her interest in food chemistry, she started a postdoc (awarded by FCT, 108 k€) on preservative strategies for wine. This was the stimulus for her first FCT project (100 k€) as Principal Investigator (PI) developing chitosan-based materials to replace sulfites in wine. Due the outputs of this work an industrial project was funded (290 k€) for the application of chitosan films to the industry, where the candidate was the responsible for the scientific issues, resulting in 1 international granted patent.
The expertise gathered on functional polysaccharides allowed to extend her research to marine resources and exploration of their potential for biomedical applications. This research on seaweed and microalgae polysaccharides was funded by FCT (PI, CarboPol-u-Algae, 50 k€) with collaboration of 3B’s (U Minho) and two algae companies (AlgaPlus; Allmicroalgae).
As a result of the increasing interest on materials science, in 2015, C. Nunes integrated CICECO and started a collaboration with ICMM-CSIC (Madrid), on the development of functional bionanocomposites based on polysaccharides (funded 72 k€). This was an opportunity to explore other fields of application, considering different biomedical purposes and food packaging. This was the motivation for a European Project BioFoodPack (co-PI, 680 k€) about the development of polysaccharide-based active food packaging for packaged food sterilization. This work was an opportunity to link her expertise in polysaccharides to food chemistry and biochemistry, designing materials tailored to preserve food.
As microalgae polysaccharides emerges as functional molecules with high valorization potential, in 2018, she got as PI another FCT project (Coccolitho4BioMat, 231 k€) exploiting coccolithophore microalgae. In parallel, other biocomposites functionalities (electric, magnetic and piezoelectric) for cancer therapy, sensing and neuromuscular stimulation have been pursued.
Overall, C. Nunes main research interests are to understand how the structural features of polysaccharides and biological properties can be potentiated towards sustainable functional materials for food packaging and biomedical applications. In total (since 2006) she published 1 national and international granted patent, 8 book chapters, and 92 SCI papers (28% as corresponding and 10 % as last author), with a h=24 and 1537 citations (3 papers > 100 cit. and 13 in journals of IF≥7). Her internationalization is recognized by 18 papers co-authored with international scientists. Besides, she is/was involved in 4 COST actions (COST CIRCULABILITY was the proposer and is a management committee member). She participated in over 100 international conferences delivering 5 invited and 20 oral presentations. At the moment, besides the FCT project, as PI, she is member of the team of 7 national projects (3 as PI at UA), 6 industrial projects (3 as PI at UA) and 1 European research project. During the last years, she supervises 1 post-doctoral fellow, 8 PhD (4 finished, 1 joint doctorate – ICMM-CSIC), 39 MSc and 36 BSc project students and 14 initial research fellows. The international network allowed to supervise short-period work of 7 PhD and 1 Post-Doc foreign students (China, Spain, Italy, Czech). She participated in 15 academic degree juries (2 as president and 14 as main arguer), where one was a PhD thesis from Wageningen University.
Over the past 5 years, she established her scientific independence in the field of marine polysaccharide-based materials, recognized by the increasing quality of the publications, 9 as last author in a total of 55 SCI papers (10 in journals of IF≥7, 3 journal cover). Her current research team includes 1 researcher, 2 postdoctoral researcher, 4 initial research, 4 PhD, 3 MSc and 2 BSc students.
